The harvesting campaign in Russia is in an active phase - work is being carried out as usual in 45 regions of the country, from the South to the Far East. Among other things, enterprises have started harvesting early varieties of cabbage, carrots, red beets and onions, as well as tomatoes, cucumbers and other crops.

In total, more than 250 thousand tons of vegetables have already been harvested in open ground. The traditional leaders in their production are Volgograd, Astrakhan, Rostov, Saratov and Moscow regions, Krasnodar and Stavropol regions, as well as the republics of the North Caucasus.

Also since the beginning of the year, the production of greenhouse vegetables has shown positive dynamics. More than 880 thousand tons of greenhouse products have already been grown in the organized sector, which is 22.4% higher than the figure for the same period last year. Including 531 thousand tons of cucumbers and 331 thousand tons of tomatoes were harvested. The ten leading regions include Lipetsk, Moscow, Volgograd, Kaluga, Novosibirsk regions, Krasnodar and Stavropol regions, the republics of Karachay-Cherkessia, Tatarstan and Bashkortostan.

In the current season, the Ministry of Agriculture expects an increase in the production of the main types of open-ground vegetables. According to the forecast, the potato harvest will grow by 5% to 7.15 million tons, carrots - by 3.1%, cabbage and onions - by 1%, tomatoes and cucumbers by 5% and 3%, respectively. The collection of greenhouse vegetables will exceed 1.4 million tons against 1.37 million tons last year.

Growth in production will help maintain a stable price situation. Currently, the cost of vegetables is already actively reduced in connection with the arrival of a new crop on the market. Thus, according to data as of July 21, prices for potatoes fell by 2.7% over the week (-11.3% per month), for carrots - by 2% (-8.9% per month). The cost of cucumbers decreased by 1.8% over the week (-14.3% over the month), tomatoes - by 6.5% (-27.1% over the month), onions - by 7.2%, (-24, 8% per month), apples - by 1.1% (-5.8% per month).

In general, IT should be noted that the level of producer prices for vegetables has significantly decreased in recent years. So, for example, compared to the same period in 2015, the cost of carrots is now lower by 19.5%, onions - by 19.3%, cabbage - by 6.8%, potatoes - by 3.8%. In the future, this trend will be supported by an increase in production volumes, increased competition, as well as the development of trade formats without intermediaries and additional margins in the commodity distribution chain.
