Rusy: Time confirms the correctness of Belarus' chosen strategy for ensuring food security

Mikhail Rusy. May 22, MINSK . Time confirms the correctness of the food security strategy chosen by Belarus, said Mikhail Rusy, Chairman of the Standing Commission of the Council of the Republic on Legislation and State Building, on the sidelines of the XI Nevsky International Ecological Congress in St. Petersburg , BELTA reports.

"Today, the global food market is in a difficult situation caused by EXPORT restrictions and geopolitical instability. All this seriously complicates the solution of food security problems both on a global scale and in individual countries. Time has once again confirmed the correctness of the strategy chosen by the Republic of Belarus to ensure food security based on sustainable domestic agro-industrial production and a competent socio-economic policy aimed at providing high-quality nutrition to the population," said Mikhail Rusy. "To ensure food security, the country has adopted and is implementing the Doctrine of National Food Security of the Republic of Belarus until 2030, which is the main strategic planning document defining key goals, objectives, indicators and implementation mechanisms, including the climate agenda and all international obligations of the country in each area."

As a result, the level of self-sufficiency of Belarus in the main food groups exceeds 100%. "Our country is capable of feeding itself and exporting food products . As practice has shown, it is the strategic approaches of the HEAD of state to the development of the industry that have yielded results," the parliamentarian noted. "Food security in the country is ensured by its own production. The level of self-sufficiency in MILK is 267%, MEAT - 133%, eggs - 126%, potatoes - 112%. Consumer demand for food products is more than 86% satisfied by the products of domestic producers. There is still high demand for our products among foreign consumers. Today, we supply food products to 103 countries of the world.

" "The level of food security for all types of products in Belarus reaches 95%. The country produces 139 kg of meat per person, and consumes 98. High self-sufficiency is observed in eggs and vegetables. The production of dairy products almost four times exceeds their consumption. The republic exports all surplus products of food industry enterprises," the chairman of the commission emphasized.

In the issue of food security, the quality of products plays a significant role. "This is what the President regularly draws attention to. It is no coincidence that 2024 was declared the Year of Quality by the decision of the head of state. The regulatory and technical framework is constantly being improved in the country, because the safety and quality of products begins with the technical requirements applied by the manufacturer. And it is no coincidence that the food industry is the leader in the number of developed standards, which is due to the export orientation and social significance of this sector. Today, there are over 3,180 state standards in the food industry in Belarus. For the sustainable operation of the agro-industrial complex in the context of climate change, since the 2000s, adaptive farming systems developed by scientists for each region of the country have been used in the Republic of Belarus, taking into account their climate dependence, which are periodically adjusted," added Mikhail Rusy.
