August 22, MINSK. The drought has taken a toll on French agriculture. The country will soon face a shortage of potatoes and MILK. This is reported with reference to the publication Liberation.
This year is expected to be one of the worst in terms of yields in the last two decades."We produce more than 3 billion euros worth of potatoes, but the effects of the drought could reduce this volume by 1 billion euros," Geoffroy d'Evry, HEAD of the French Union of Potato Growers, said.
According to him, potatoes are mainly used in the food industry, for the production of chips and cardboard packaging. The harvested potato crop this year will not meet the needs of these industries.
The drought has also affected the French dairy industry and beekeeping. Thus, milk yields this year have decreased by 20%. Due to the heat, the grass on the pastures has burned out, so the animals receive less food.
The head of the Union of French beekeepers, Christian Pont, called the current year black for the industry, and the current state of affairs - dramatic.
France has experienced extreme heat this year, with temperatures rising above forty degrees Celsius. Restrictions on water use were introduced throughout the country in July.
