Turkey's Livestock Markets Closed Due to New Strain of Foot-and-Mouth Disease

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, a new serotype of the virus has been detected, leading to an increase in infection rates. Authorities noted that a recent increase in livestock movements due to the Eid al-Adha holiday, celebrated in early June, contributed to the spread of the pathogen. The religious holiday   is characterized by the slaughter of animals, primarily cattle .

Restrictions on the movement of animals

These restrictions include the suspension of the sale, exchange and transfer of animals at markets, fairs and festivals related to livestock activities. They confirmed that these measures will remain in place until all vulnerable animals in the country are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination campaign accelerated and food supplies guaranteed

The Turkish ministry indicated that the vaccination campaign would be stepped up to bring the outbreak under control as quickly as possible. it also stressed that the decision was aimed at protecting animal HEALTH and preventing further losses in the livestock sector.


The authorities assured that this measure will not affect the country's food security or disrupt the supply of MEAT and dairy products for human consumption. The government reiterated its commitment to control the health situation without compromising domestic supplies.
