The growth of domestic pork production is facilitated by a sharp reduction in its imports.

According to the Pork Market Analysis in RUSSIA, prepared by BusinesStat in 2021, in 2016-2020, pork production for slaughter in carcass weight in Russia increased by 28.2% and reached 4.3 million tons. Production increased annually. The highest growth rate occurred in 2020 and amounted to 9.2%. A number of factors contributed to this. First, in 2020, domestic demand for products increased. Despite the saturation of the pork market in Russia, in 2020 its sales increased by 5.7%. During 1H 2020, sales growth was supported by the established low price level. During the summer period, the increase in domestic demand was facilitated by the fact that in the context of the CORONAVIRUS pandemic, the majority of Russians spent their holidays within the country, which led to an increase in sales of food products, including pork.

The growth of domestic pork production in Russia in 2020 was also facilitated by a sharp reduction in its imports - by 9.6 times compared to 2019, to 8.4 thousand tons. to the Russian market, refocusing on Asian countries, where prices are higher. Another reason for the reduction of foreign deliveries was changes in the tariff policy. Previously, pork imports to Russia were limited by a quota (400,000 tons in 2019), and since 2020, a 25% duty has been imposed on the import of this type of MEAT, which has made supplies unprofitable for most foreign suppliers.

A prerequisite for an increase in pork production in 2020 was also the growth of its exports - by 3.8 times compared to 2019, to 191.7 thousand tons. The main contribution to the growth of the indicator was made by an increase in supplies to Vietnam by 51.9 thousand tons. The country's demand for imported pork has been driven by a sharp decline in its own production due to the spread of African swine fever, the coronavirus pandemic and floods.

According to BusinesStat estimates, in 2021-2025 pork output will grow by 3.6-0.7% per year. At the same time, the growth rate of the indicator will decrease annually due to the proximity of the Russian pork market to saturation. In 2025, the production of pork for slaughter in slaughter weight will amount to 5 million tons, which will exceed the value of 2020 by 16.4%.
