"X5 Club": how do men's and women's food baskets differ?

Traditionally, it is women who purchase more and more goods in grocery stores. In the first half of 2023, they made more than 550 million purchases, which is 38% more than men in the same period of time. Moreover, this trend has continued for many years - the number of purchases made by men in the first half of this year increased by only 1% compared to the previous period.

Both men and women visit stores on average 7–8 times a month and purchase a set of 6 products. The top sales, regardless of the gender of the buyer, are bananas (women purchased more than 33 thousand tons of them in the first half of the year, and men - more than 20 thousand tons), granulated sugar, potatoes and broiler chicken carcasses. In this case, bananas are included in every 13th check for women, and in every 15th for men.

If we assume that the way to the heart of the other half is through the stomach, then women purchased more than 21 thousand tons of white cabbage in the first half of 2023 alone, which would be enough to prepare at least 215 million servings of classic borscht. By the way, men often buy beets for borscht, and women buy sour cream.

The top men's purchases for the first half of the year included 13 thousand tons of potatoes and 11 thousand tons of onions, which is equivalent to at least 86 million servings of fried potatoes with onions.

A distinctive feature of men’s purchases was the presence of drinks in baskets, including beer, water and juices, which significantly increases the overall weight of purchases and are usually not purchased by women in offline stores in large quantities. Women, in turn, often opt for green salads and instant noodles. In addition, women are at least twice as likely as men to buy products from the “care and hygiene” category, as well as “household chemicals.”

Regarding the stereotype that women are cat people and men are dog people, statistics say the opposite. Both men and women are equally interested in cat products - both sexes buy them at least 6 times more than dog products.
