Newcastle disease outbreak detected in Turkey for the first time in 16 years

The outbreak was detected in the province of Agri, in a private farm. The dysfunctional farm housed 220 birds, 3 of them got sick and died, the rest were destroyed.

Newcastle disease is called pseudoplague of birds. All domestic and wild birds of the order Gallinae are susceptible to the disease: chickens, guinea fowl, turkeys, pheasants, peacocks. In sick birds, damage to the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system is observed. The infection spreads quickly and causes mass mortality, killing up to 90% of the non-immune livestock.

The main carriers of the disease are wild and synanthropic (living near humans) birds.
