According to the results of the first half of 2021, online food sales increased by 2.5 times, mainly due to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

According to a study by the Data Insight agency, which specializes in the e-commerce market, in January-June, 118 million orders were placed in Russia for a total of 149 billion rubles. On an annualized basis, their number increased by 268%, while online sales increased by 174%.

The first place in the product segment of the e-commerce market in terms of sales was taken by the VkusVill retail chain with a share of 14%, the second by SberMarket, and the third by Samokat. Following them, the positions in the top ten were distributed in the following sequence: Delivery Club, Wildberries, Yandex.Lavka, Ozon, Pyaterochka Delivery, Utkonos and Perekrestok Vprok.

70% of online retailers in the grocery segment are registered in Moscow and the Moscow region, 12% in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, and about the same number is in other regions of the European part of Russia.

In a commentary on Delovoy Peterburg's material, Sergey Lishchuk, managing partner of the consulting company Retail4You, said that now many regional retailers are noticing a decrease in the number of online orders. In Russia, there is no unambiguous trend when a consumer who appreciated express food delivery services during the pandemic became their regular active user. This is due to different phases of market maturity in the regions.
