"The veterinary service has established a quarantine for bovine leukemia in the Gorodovikovo district of Kalmykia . The restrictive measures were imposed following the discovery of eight cattle infected with the bovine leukemia virus at a livestock camp in the Yuzhnenskoye rural municipality," the statement reads.
A cow infected with brucellosis was previously found in this same rural municipality . The district's veterinary service is now working to eliminate two outbreaks of the disease—brucellosis and bovine leukemia.
Bovine leukemia is a chronic infectious disease characterized by viral infestation of blood cells, leading to genetic damage and malignant cell transformation. The disease is caused by the bovine leukemia virus (BLV) of the Retroviridae family, which is naturally transmitted to cattle, zebu, buffalo, and sheep. Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection transmitted from animals to humans and characterized by damage to multiple organs and systems in the human body.
