Growth was mainly due to increased supplies of wheat. Last year, grain shipments amounted to 362,000 tons worth $112 million, while a year earlier it was only 28,000 tons. RUSSIA began supplying wheat to Brazil in 2018 after an eight-year hiatus and last year became the 4th cereal supplier to the Federative Republic.
Since 2019, Russia has been exporting malt to Brazil, and in 2021 shipments reached a record high, exceeding 72 thousand tons. In 2022, 20 thousand tons of malt worth $8.8 million were exported from Russia to Brazil, but despite the decline, the country retained the 2nd place among the buyers of the Russian product in physical terms.
Brazil is also a significant importer of yeast from Russia. In 2022, the volume of supplies amounted to 1.7 thousand tons (-5.5% compared to 2021) worth $4.5 million (+17%). In addition, Russia supplies wheat gluten, potato flakes, fish products, confectionery, tobacco and a number of other goods to the Latin American country.
Brazil is one of the world's leading producers and exporters of agricultural products. Historically, agriculture has been one of the key sectors in the state economy. Brazil is the world's largest net exporter of agricultural and food products, and ranks third in terms of EXPORT value. According to ITC Trade Map, in 2022 Brazil exported $135 billion worth of agricultural products, the most significant categories were soybeans ($47 billion), corn ($12 billion), beef ($12 billion) , sugar ($11 billion) and soybean meal ($10 billion).
Imports of agricultural products from Brazil in 2022 increased to $14 billion. The leading import positions were wheat ($2 billion), fresh or chilled fish ($747 million), malt ($739 million), corn ($613 million). ) and olive oil ($540 million).
Comment by Russian Trade Representative in Brazil Viktor Sheremetker:
“There are a lot of directions for the development of exports of agricultural products to Brazil. First of all, these are the markets where our entrepreneurs have found their niche, which needs to be expanded. Here you can note both Russian-made alcoholic beverages and fish, especially cod, which is a traditional dish in Brazil. We believe that Russian enterprises can satisfy a significant part of Brazil's needs for cod.
Of course, it is necessary to mention the supply of wheat and malt. Wheat consumption in Brazil has been steadily rising since 2015, and malt is the main ingredient for making beer, which the Latin American country is one of the world's leading producers.
It is important to note that the export of Russian ice cream to the country is steadily growing. In a hot climate, this product is becoming increasingly popular in Brazil.
When working on the Brazilian market, Russian manufacturers need to pay great attention to the trade infrastructure. Deliveries of agricultural products imply significant volumes of cargo transshipment, well-established logistics and speed of operations.”
