The lean hog market ended Friday up 45 to 60 cents, bringing the April contract up $1.97 for the week. The USDA average benchmark price for hogs fell $1.71 to $71.49 Friday afternoon. The CME hog price index increased 81 cents to $78.78 on Feb. 21.
The weekly EXPORT sales report showed pork orders for the week ended February 15 at 29,000 tonnes. This is less than 30 thousand over the last two weeks and 43 thousand tons 3 weeks ago. The USDA did revise export data last week, citing errors regarding CHINA and Mexico. Pork obligations are now listed at 456.3 thousand tons for the year, which is 3% ahead of last year's pace.
The national hog carcass price was $91.16 Friday afternoon, down 73 cents from the previous week. The USDA reported pork production for the week at 558.9 million pounds, up from 556 million pounds last week and 510.2 million pounds for the same week last year. Slaughter for the week increased by 0.7% and by 9.2% compared to the same week last year.
