US Hog Market Review Week 46, November 18, 2024

Pork shares fell Thursday afternoon, spurring selling by some speculative funds that hold a large net long position, said Austin Schroeder, a commodities analyst at Brugler Marketing and Management.

Wholesale hog carcasses rose $3.04 to $97.11 a hundredweight Friday afternoon, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture , after falling $3.19 to $94.07 a hundredweight Thursday afternoon. The CME lean hog index was $89.78 Friday.

Weekly EXPORT sales data showed net sales of 19,825 tonnes of pork in the week ending November 7. Mexico purchased a total of 9,600 tonnes, of which 3,900 tonnes were sold to Japan. Export shipments were down from the previous week's 26-week high of 31,087 tonnes.  

The FOB pork price rose again in Friday's report, up $3.04 to $97.11 per hundredweight. Only loin and ham showed no gains, and brisket was up again after falling $18.44 on Thursday. The USDA estimated weekly hog slaughter at 2.633 million HEAD, up 28,000 head from last week due to higher slaughter on Saturday, but down 14,405 head from the same week last year.
