USA: Pork market review for week 39 from Oct 2, 2023

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA), in a quarterly report released after the close of trading, reported that the total hog population as of September 1 was 74.3 million HEAD, up 0.3% from a year earlier. Analysts polled by REUTERS had expected a decline of 0.8%.

Analysts had generally expected smaller numbers as low hog prices and high operating costs made raising hogs unprofitable for producers.

Now the higher-than-expected USDA data looks pessimistic for futures, said Altin Calo, an economist at Steiner Consulting.

“The pullback that was expected in terms of supply may not happen, or at least it may not happen to the extent that the market expected,” Calo said.

The most active December contract on the CME rose 2.75 cents to close at 75.525 cents per pound.

The USDA report said market hog inventories rose 0.4% to 68.2 million head, although analysts had expected a fall of 0.7%. Meanwhile, the pig harvest in June-August increased by 0.4% compared to 2022 and amounted to 34.2 million head. Analysts had expected a decline of 1.4%.

“Most of the numbers in the report, especially the number of market hogs, are slightly higher than analysts expected,” Calo said.

 August cold storage pork inventories totaled 471.1 million pounds, down 13.2% from last year. Compared to a year earlier, higher inventory levels were recorded for carb (+1.3%), shoulder (+24.3%), neck (+1.7%) and brisket (+3.3%). Lower stock levels were recorded for ham (-6.1%) and ribs (-47.4%). While brisket inventories were higher than last year and ribs lower than last year, inventory levels for both categories fell 47.3% and 9.2%, respectively, over the past two months.
