US Hog Market Review for Week 36, September 8, 2025
Photo is illustrative in nature. From open sources.

Lean pork futures rose on Friday, up 87 cents to $1.05. October futures rose $1.00 last week. The USDA's report showed contract prices at $101.25, down $3.18 from the previous day. The CME Lean Hog Index rose 5 cents on September 3 to $105.97.

EXPORT sales data showed pork orders falling to 23,711 tons, down from the previous week. Mexico became the largest buyer of U.S. pork. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated hog slaughter at 2.319 million HEAD. This is only 73,000 head less than last week, despite the holiday Monday (slaughter increased on Saturday), and 10,979 head less than the same holiday week last year.

MEAT prices are bucking seasonal trends after Labor Day. Tighter supplies are pushing up beef and pork prices, despite the usual slowdown in demand. Reduced production, coupled with strong meat demand, is certainly putting upward pressure on prices, with supply constraints now outweighing the usual seasonal decline following Labor Day. Wholesale pork prices typically peak in the summer and decline in the fall, but this year's production remains below last year's. it appears that the higher number of piglets farrowing isn't offsetting the lower number of sows. Prices for loins and hams are declining seasonally, but ribs, briskets, and hams have risen sharply, highlighting the volatility of pork prices. With beef and pork on the rise, the next step will be higher poultry prices, especially as Thanksgiving approaches.

Probable price ranges for next week:

October lean pork futures - $92.00 to $97.05, with a linear trend

December soybean meal futures - from $272.60 to $295.00, with a linear trend

December corn futures - $4.03 1/2 to $4.24 1/4, with a linear trend
