
"October is just National Pork Month, and buying starts the first week of September," said Rich Nelson, chief strategist at Allendale Inc. "We're still in a downtrend in the cash markets, so we haven't seen buying start yet."
The most active October lean pork futures contract rose 500 cents to 83.050 cents a pound. For the week, the October contract has gained 4.04%.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said slaughter volume was 2.39 million head, up 18,000 from the same period last year.
The U.S. hog inventory as of June 1, 2023, was 72.4 million head, up slightly from June 1, 2022, but down 1 percent from March 1, 2023. The breeding herd inventory of 6.15 million head was down slightly from a year ago but remained 1 percent above the previous quarter. Hog market inventories of 66.2 million head were up slightly from a year ago but down 1 percent from the previous quarter.
