USA: Pork market review for week 32 of 2023

Lean pork traders had a net long position of 33,826 contracts as of August 8, according to the latest CFTC data. This is 3 thousand more contracts than a week earlier, when switching from short to long positions.

WASDE's monthly report said pork production was down 107 million pounds in 2023. The forecast for 2024 output was unchanged from July at 27.335 billion pounds.

The USDA estimates weekly hog slaughter at 2.354 million head. Thus, the total livestock since the beginning of the year amounted to 76.837 million heads, which is 1.3% more than last year.
