The price of a hog carcass rose $4.33 to $101.35. The only decrease was for a belly-loaded picnic, which rose $16.58. The USDA estimated hog slaughter last week, including Saturday, at 2.39 million head. That's 32,000 fewer than the week before, but more than 74,000 more than a year ago.
Ample supplies in the US have put pressure on the hog market, which fell to a five-month low last week. According to the USDA, the average hog weight for the week ending June 8 was 289 pounds, slightly lower than the previous week but higher than 279.9 pounds a year ago.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Thursday reported that net export sales of 2024 U.S. pork totaled 30,100 metric tons for the week ended June 6, down 1% from the average for the previous four weeks.
