The monthly cold storage report showed a slight increase in April pork inventories, up 1.19% month over month at 501.279 million pounds. That's down 11.66% from a year ago, compared with a 13.26% year-over-year decline at the end of March.
The national hog carcass price rose 45 cents Friday afternoon to $99.14. The USDA estimates that federally inspected hog slaughter on Friday was 451,000 HEAD, and total hog slaughter through Saturday was 2.373 million head. This is 31,000 fewer head than the previous week, but 17,942 more than the same week last year.
