The national hog carcass price fell 9 cents in Friday night's report to $101.20. The USDA estimated the federally inspected hog slaughter this week at 2.485 million HEAD. This is 64,000 more than last week and 58,000 more than the same week last year. Pork production this week was up 1.4% from a year ago to 534.6 million pounds.
The National Pork Producers Council is lobbying Congress to address state animal welfare laws in the U.S. Farm Bill. The NPPC highlights the negative impacts of California's Proposition 12 law, including rising prices and decreased availability of pork. NPPC seeks bipartisan support for federal legislation to preempt state laws and ensure consistency across states. Although stand-alone legislation such as the EATS Act has not yet been passed, the NPPC remains hopeful of a solution in the next Farm Bill.
NPPC President Laurie Stevermer said some of the negative consequences of the law that NPPC and other opponents warned about have become reality. “Now that Proposition 12 has taken effect, we are seeing prices for select pork products in California 20% higher than before Proposition 12. We are also seeing fresh pork consumption down 8-10%,” she said.
