USA: Cattle market review for week 35 of 2023

"The market is essentially saying, 'We've got several months of solid trading now,'" said Rich Nelson, chief strategist at Allendale Inc. “We are all waiting for the next drop in supply, but it will not happen until the fourth quarter or the first half of next year.”

Cash Cattle traded $2.00 lower on the Northern Plains at about $182.00/cwt., while on the Southern Plains they remained steady $1.00 lower at $178.00 to $179.00/cwt. .

This week's slaughter volume is estimated at 629,000 HEAD, down 13,000 from the same period a year ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said.

 The USDA reports that the total U.S. cattle and calf population was 95.9 million head as of July 1, 2023, down 3 percent from July 1, 2022. The number of all cows and heifers that calved was 38.8 million head, down 2 percent from a year ago.
