Cattle futures in the US decline due to profit taking. Cattle futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) fell on Thursday due to profit taking after three consecutive days of growth, REUTERS reported citing traders.
Signs of weakness in the cash market also weighed on futures for cattle. The August contract for fattening cattle fell from the highest level since November 2015. The most active August live cattle futures fell 1.475 cents to 135.4 cents a pound, falling below the 100-day and 200-day moving averages during the session.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) said Thursday morning that weekly beef EXPORT sales were 9,200 tons, up from 11,000 tons the previous week.
USDA's 2022 global beef production forecast remained virtually unchanged from April at 58.7 million tonnes. Higher world prices for beef continue to stimulate the slaughter of large producers. Improved rainfall has prompted Australian producers to keep more heifers to rebuild the herd, but beef production is expected to pick up from last year's all-time low.
Global beef exports are projected to rise by 1% to 11.9 million tonnes in 2022. Growth in Brazil, CANADA and Mexico more than offset the decline in Australia. Brazil is forecast to be a strong exporter of most of its products, driven by strong demand from CHINA, Egypt and the US. While global import demand remains robust, inflationary pressures and ongoing logistical challenges are dampening expectations of demand growth as many countries lift COVID-19- related restrictions .
