CME June live cattle futures rose 1,600 cents to 196,800 cents a pound, while May feeder cattle futures settled up 3,400 cents to 278,700 cents a pound.
Stock prices returned to higher territory on Friday, capping a week in which investors were rattled by announcements of tariff relief and retaliation, including U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement Wednesday of a 90-day tariff freeze for dozens of affected countries and an additional 145% hike in tariffs on goods imported from CHINA — after taking into account duties imposed earlier this year.
China has been raising tariffs on US imports with each increase by Trump, bringing retaliatory tariffs on American goods to 125%. Beijing has made it clear that this will be the final increase, although other forms of retaliation remain on the agenda.
Analysts say the cattle market is highly dependent on market demand, and stock market swings can also indicate where consumer demand is heading.
" Cattle have been following the stock market lately ," said Austin Schroeder, a commodity analyst at Brugler Marketing and Management.
Tariffs are expected to raise U.S. beef prices. President Trump has imposed a 10% tariff on Australian goods. Australian farmers, traders and industry groups said Thursday they would pass on any additional costs from the tariffs to U.S. consumers, which could push up the price of burgers and steaks. Australia exports about $ 2.5 billion worth of beef annually to the U.S., its biggest market.
