USA: Cattle market overview for the 13th week of 2023

The cash market fell from $168 to $173 on Friday. The bulk of trading this week was around $170 in the north and around $166 in the south. The CME Feed Cattle Index stood at $193.34 as of March 30, up 99 cents.

The USDA reported wholesale prices for boxed beef at $282.07, up $2.19 from a week earlier. The USDA estimated FI cattle slaughter at 651,000 in the week leading up to Saturday. This is 25,000 heads more in a week and 12,000 heads more than in the same week last year. Since the beginning of the year, slaughter is still 2.3% behind last year's pace.
