Average broiler prices in the US market as of November 5, 2021 showed a positive trend. The average cost of broilers in October 2021 was 102.95 cents/lb (-2.6% m/m, +52.1% y/y), with total sales of around 41,730 thousand pounds (+0.9% m/m) , +18.9% for the year).
Poultry MEAT production in 2021 is projected to show a fairly modest increase over the past 20 years. Covid-19-related problems with production and processing, logistics, which began in March 2020, led to a sharp increase in feed costs in the second half of 2020 and early this year, which affected the profitability of the industry.
The production of young chickens (broilers) in the first 9 months of 2021 increased by half a percentage point compared to a year earlier. Average poultry weight at processing is estimated to be about one percent heavier than a year ago as processors focus on producing larger birds. But that doesn't make up for a roughly 2% decline in poultry slaughter this quarter.
Turkey production in the first 9 months of the year was 2.4% lower than a year earlier. Per capita turkey consumption has been falling annually since 2016 as demand for whole poultry declined over the holidays and competition from chicken and pork reduced demand for turkey in the deli meats category. A recovery in demand for turkey has been noted this year as high beef and pork prices have turned consumer interest in ground turkey along with a recovery in the economy and the foodservice sector.
