
Average broiler prices in the US market as of October 29, 2021 showed mixed trends. The average cost of broilers in October 2021 was 102.95 cents/lb (-2.6% m/m, +52.1% y/y), with total sales of around 41,730 thousand pounds (+0.9% m/m) , +18.9% for the year).
Prices for poultry in all categories fell, with the largest drop in the cost of birds weighing 3.51 pounds or more (-$2.67).
Poultry consumption over the past two decades (2000-2020) -chicken and turkey- is trending towards 113 pounds by 2020. Over these twenty years, the average annual increase was just under one pound, with most of the increase due to increased consumption of chicken. Poultry consumption is expected to decline slightly in 2021 to 112 pounds with stable chicken production and a slight decline in turkey production. Domestic poultry supplies are expected to recover in 2022 and 2023, pushing consumption up to 114 pounds.
LMIC forecasts record chicken exports of 8.0 million pounds over the next two years, representing more than 17% of total US production . As with beef and pork, rising chicken exports could reduce per capita consumption and keep poultry prices high.
