Amid the spread of bird flu in Brazil, the US is considering a strategy to vaccinate turkeys against bird flu. The US is working on an avian flu vaccination scenario targeting turkeys in several states with the most turkey farms, which best fits a cost-benefit strategy, the US chief veterinarian said Tuesday. However, the vaccination decision has not yet been made, said Rosemary Sifford, who is also the Associate Administrator of the Veterinary Services Program at the Department of Agriculture (USDA). “Any vaccination strategy has to be a very targeted strategy…I would certainly not expect vaccinationwill be widely distributed,” Sifford added. She sees "no positive results" in vaccinating chickens because they have a short lifespan.
