USA: Week 12 Broiler Market Review 2022

Average broiler prices in the US market are showing an upward trend. Over the week, the price tag increased by 4.6%, while sales volumes decreased significantly - by 10.7% at once over the week.

USDA APHIS reported the first US case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in 2022 on January 14 in a wild bird in South Carolina. Since the disease was first reported, HPAI has spread rapidly, with the USDA reporting 59 cases in backyard and commercial flocks affecting more than 14.2 million birds.

The growing number of cases of HPAI in commercial herds also raises concerns about the potential impact on trade, especially trade restrictions on key EXPORT destinations. According to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), most major US poultry export destinations have imposed various export restrictions. Mexico and CHINA have imposed restrictions on states that have reported cases of HPAI. CANADA has stated that poultry exports from the 10-kilometer quarantine zone are unacceptable.

In 2021, total broiler exports were at a record high of nearly 7.4 billion pounds, less than one percent or 307,000 pounds more than in 2020. The main export destination was Mexico, where almost 1.6 billion pounds were shipped, accounting for 22% of total exports last year. The Caribbean (Cuba, Haiti, Bahamas, Saint Lucia, Aruba, Antigua and Barbuda) was the next largest export market at 925.2 million pounds, accounting for 13% of total exports. China accounted for about 5% of last year's total shipments at 382.4 million pounds. Canada and Angola accounted for about 4% of total exports with shipments of 316.1 and 317.8 million pounds respectively. Together, the countries listed above accounted for about half (48%) of all broiler exports in 2021.
