The USDA has spent more than $670 million fighting highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and reimbursing owners, the Animal and Plant HEALTH Inspection Service said. The costs included more than $414 million in compensation for poultry and egg destruction, $142 million for flock culling, disposal of dead birds and virus eradication activities, and $114 million for personnel, government agreements and field expenses.
US authorities are considering vaccinating poultry against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), but the poultry industry may oppose it. According to a FoodDive article, broiler producers are concerned about the implications for the trade, but fears that the virus will mutate or spread to humans could spur a new plan of action. The US egg industry is more receptive to the idea of vaccinating birds.
