USA: Week 11 Broiler Market Review 2022

Average broiler prices in the US market are showing an upward trend. Over the week, the price tag rose by 5.9%, while sales volumes also rose significantly - immediately by 8.9% over the week.

The USDA Animal and Plant HEALTH Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a non-profit flock in Merrick County, Nebraska. This brings the total number of confirmed cases of HPAI to 37, of which 16 are in non-commercial backyard herds. The USDA has also updated the number of birds affected by HPAI in Jefferson County, Wisconsin to 2,757,800 birds in a commercial layer flock - APHIS originally reported a total of 3 million birds.

Broiler production is declining due to declining slaughter. Broiler exports also declined due to lower production expectations. Broiler prices rose amid the latest data and expectations of tight supplies. The forecast for table egg production in the first half of 2022 has been revised down due to higher expected production costs and a slow increase in the number of laying hens. Wholesale egg prices (NYC Grade A Large) for all quarters have been revised upwards as current prices rose higher than expected and production growth slowed. Exports of eggs and egg products were revised down due to lower-than-expected shipments in December and January. Turkey production and stock forecasts have been adjusted downwards, but production growth of 1% is still expected in 2022. Prices have risen every quarter and are expected to increase gradually over the course of the year.
