
Average broiler prices in the US market are showing an upward trend. The price tag rose 3.6% in a week, while sales volumes fell by 1.4% in a week.
The average cost of broilers in February 2022 was 125.79 cents/lb (-4.3% m/m, +51.6% y/y), with total sales of about 40,213 thousand pounds (-1.3% m/m) ,+3.7% per year).
Latest USDA forecastfor broiler meat production has been revised down by 257 million pounds, but production will still rise this year, albeit only 0.7% higher than the previous year. This reflects still very slow supply growth as processors grapple with high feed costs and, more importantly, a shortage of workers at factories due to the pandemic. USDA forecasts do not take into account the impact of highly pathogenic avian influenza on the industry. Businesses in three states have now reported an outbreak of the virus, with a total of 741,000 birds affected.
