USA: long-term forecasts of pork production and consumption

Figure 1. Long-term projections for US animal protein production . Prepared by 333 Latin America using data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Pork production is projected to reach 14 million tonnes (Mt) in 2032, representing an 11.7% increase from the projected 2021 total.

Between 2021 and 2032, beef and poultry production is expected to increase by 0.5% and 17.1%, respectively, and the volumes will reach 12.8 and 23.6 million tons.

Compared to other proteins, pork will grow at a much higher rate than beef, although it will outpace the growth in poultry MEAT production.

From 2023, pork production is expected to exceed that of beef, widening the gap between the two protein types year after year. It is expected that in 2032 1.25 million tons more pork will be produced than beef.

Per capita pork consumption is expected to grow the most between 2021 and 2032 (+10.2%), reaching 25.5 kg per person in 2032, followed by chicken (+9.7%) and turkey ( +1.3%), the consumption of which will reach 48.1 and 7 kg/inhabitant at the end of the period, respectively.

The consumption of beef (-5.8%), veal (-50%) and mutton (-7.1%) is expected to decrease, which in 2032 are projected at the level of 25.2, 0.04 and 0.6 kg/inhabitant respectively.
