In recent years, there has been a noticeable decrease in meat production in the Tomsk region. According to data provided by the RIA Tomsk portal, 163.3 thousand tons of livestock and poultry meat were produced last year, which is 5% less than in the previous year. The main reason for this decline was the decision of a large agricultural holding company, Sibagro, to transfer its pig population to fill a pig farm in the Novosibirsk region.
Statistics and dynamics of production
For clarity, it can be noted that two years ago, the volume of meat production in the region was 165.5 thousand tons. Thus, the observed decrease is a continuation of the negative trend. In the first half of this year, the volume of meat production for slaughter was 75.8 thousand tons, which is also 4.9% lower than in the same period last year. This decrease is primarily due to a decrease in the pig population, which, in turn, affects the overall dynamics of meat production.
Reasons for the Decrease
The main factor that influenced the decline in meat production is the changes in the strategy of large agricultural holdings. The transfer of pigs to other regions, such as the Novosibirsk region, may be caused by various economic and production considerations, including more favorable business conditions, access to resources, or the need to optimize production capacities.
In addition, it is worth noting that in recent years, the agricultural sector has been experiencing other problems, such as high competition, fluctuating feed prices, and general economic conditions, which may also put pressure on meat producers.
Consequences for the region
The decline in meat production in the Tomsk region may have serious consequences for the local economy. Firstly, it may lead to an increase in prices for meat products, which will negatively affect consumers. Secondly, the reduction in production may affect employment in the agricultural sector: farmers and workers engaged in meat production may face job cuts.
In addition, a decrease in meat production volumes may reduce the competitiveness of the region as a whole, which in the long term may lead to a loss of position in the meat products market.
