CHINA accounts for about half of global pork consumption. The fourth-quarter winter season is typically the high season for pork and jerky consumption. Production fell 1.8 percent year-on-year to 14.66 million metric tons in the fourth quarter, a fourth-straight quarterly decline from the previous year.
Despite weak demand, some companies increased production in the fourth quarter after inventory and cost reductions helped them return to profitability. Many of China's major hog companies now expect slaughter rates to pick up in 2025 after production slowed in 2024 .
China's pig herd stood at 427.43 million at the end of December, down 1.6 percent from the data. The sow herd fell 1.9 percent to 40.80 million at the end of November, according to separate data from China's Ministry of Agriculture . Despite the smaller herd size, analysts expect China's pig supply to remain higher than demand in 2025, putting pressure on prices due to improved sow productivity.
