The President of the Russian Federation signed changes to the law on livestock breeding

The law , in particular, defines the terms “breeding products”, “farm animals”, “breeds” and “cross lines”.

In addition, the document gives the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation the authority to establish a list of species and breeds (types, line crosses) used in the breeding of pedigree animals. The department will also oversee the entry of data on such breeds into the Federal State Information and Analytical System of Breeding Resources.

Until September 1, 2023, such information was entered into the State Register of Selection Achievements. However, after Federal Law No. 454-FZ “On Seed Production” came into force on September 1, 2023, only varieties and hybrids of agricultural plants began to be taken into account in this register, and information about animals was no longer included.

The loss of this data had a negative impact on the overall base of genetic resources for livestock breeding, which hampered the development of breeding, the initiators of the amendments noted earlier.

According to the new law, maintaining the register of achievements in livestock breeding will resume from September 1, 2025.
