The National Meat Association spoke negatively about taxes on meat
The Center for the Protection of Animal Rights and the Russian vegan society Vita sent a letter to the Ministry of Economic Development with a proposal to raise taxes for meat producers. The National Meat Association said that the activists of this organization "do nonsense."
Animal rights activists reminded that the meat industry generates carbon emissions into the atmosphere and contributes to climate change. In this regard, activists called for following the example of other countries, where they plan to introduce a special tax for meat producers. The head of the executive committee of the National Meat Association, Sergei Yushin, spoke negatively about this initiative, calling it obvious stupidity.
“While the country is asking the Ministry of Economic Development every day what will happen to meat prices, God forbid, they will rise, because the purchasing power of the population is not growing, people are proposing to raise prices. Let them first justify their Wishlist first. And I propose to raise taxes on peas, ”Yushin mocked. According to him, vegans make up less than two percent of the Russian population, and the rest of the citizens will not pay more for meat.
In the summer of 2021, the Ministry of Finance has already reacted to the idea of introducing a meat tax in Russia as part of the carbon footprint accounting policy. According to representatives of the department, such measures are not discussed in the Ministry of Finance and are not considered in any form. The State Duma also agrees with the position of Sergei Yushin: according to Sergei Katasonov, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Budget and Taxes, the tax will not only raise meat prices, but will also cause discontent among the population.
