As for the number of pigs, compared to December 1, 2021, the number of pigs has decreased in all categories. The number of piglets and young pigs decreased by 4.8% to 1.32 million heads, fattening pigs by 4.5% to 1.12 million heads, brood sows by 7% to 212 thousand heads.

The provinces with the highest pig production were Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Styria, which increased slightly to 94% of the total (2021: 93.7%).

In 2022, the number of pigs slaughtered and deemed fit for human consumption decreased by 4.3% to 4.88 million.
