The number of cattle in France may be reduced

Despite historically high price levels, fewer cattle are likely to be sent to slaughter in France this year than in 2021.

French beef production is expected to continue to decline this year. At least, that's what the Institute of Animal Husbandry thinks so. According to the recently released annual forecast for 2022, beef production will decrease by 1.4% year on year to 1.41 million tons of carcass weight. The total volume has already been reduced in 2021 by 0.7% to 1.43 million tons, according to preliminary data.

As in the previous two annual forecasts, market experts expect cow slaughter to be limited by low availability of heifers. The number of dairy cows is also expected to decline, although the decline is projected to be slightly smaller at 1.8%. The availability of heifers is expected to slow herd turnover. According to the Institute, domestic beef consumption will decrease by only 0.3%. In terms of trade, the Institute expects a return to pre-coronavirus levels, with an expected decline in domestic production creating more opportunities for overseas supplies.
