According to the UK government, poultry meat from the UK will now gain access to the Japanese market and the industry estimates that this will lead the industry to grow to ₹65 million (US$90 million ) within 5 years.
The UK gained access to Japan's imported poultry market. Given Japan's rise in poultry consumption and its focus on reliable and attractive new products, the UK government said the market is now on the verge of becoming an important and promising new target for UK poultry meat exporters.
Victoria Prentice, UK Food Secretary said: "We are working hard to open new markets for our agri-food businesses and this is a significant opportunity for the UK poultry sector."
The market opening follows a series of negotiations over the past 4 years between UK and Japanese officials to agree on specific animal health requirements.
Cathy Doherty, CEO of the International Meat Trade Association, noted that “… British exporters will also benefit from the tariff reductions provided by the UK-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement. The agreement reduces tariffs on frozen chicken cuts from an average of 10% to zero over a number of years.”
And this fact will be taken into account when preparing the monthly analytical report Meatinfo.ru
An animal health requirement agreement between Defra and Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for the export of both fresh and cooked poultry meat was concluded in April 2021 and resulted in the approval of an export health certificate and the final opening of the market in June 2021.
