New Frozen Pork Deliveries from China to Russia: What Does This Mean for the Market

The first container terminal in St. Petersburg , part of the Delo Group holding — Global Ports, received its first batch of frozen MEAT. This significant event marked the launch of a new multimodal service organized by the meat processing plant of PJSC Cherkizovo Group in partnership with Global Ports, Refagrotrans and Novik Group. The essence of the service is to send refrigerated containers with frozen pork from the Chinese province of Jilin through the border crossing of Zabaikalsk. This scheme allows for the effective combination of rail and sea transport, significantly accelerating the delivery process.

Containers with meat are sent as part of specialized container trains, which guarantees the safety of the products. Upon arrival in St. Petersburg , the cargo is reloaded from rail transport to the ships of the Novik sea line, which deliver it to Kaliningrad. Here, meat products are processed into semi-finished products, which are then sent back to Moscow in autonomous refrigerated containers. The total transit time from sending in CHINA to receiving finished products in Moscow is only 35-40 days, which is competitive for meat product deliveries.

Such cooperation not only increases the volume of frozen meat supplies to RUSSIA, but also contributes to the development of the sausage market, expanding the range of available goods. In addition, active pork supplies from China can have a positive effect on meat prices in Russia , since an increase in supply usually leads to a decrease in prices, which is important in the context of growing demand for meat products.

Despite the positive trends, pork supplies from China face certain challenges, such as product quality and logistics. However, cooperation between Russian and Chinese companies, as well as the introduction of modern technologies in meat transportation and processing, can help overcome these difficulties. The start of mass supplies of Chinese pork via Zabaikalsk opens up new opportunities for both countries and contributes to the development of the meat industry in Russia, provided that all participants in the process continue to work on improving the quality and safety of products.
