According to the report, consumption of MEAT, fish, and dairy products will grow by 13% over the next 10 years. Experts believe this growth will occur primarily in developing countries, where wealth and population are growing. Overall, however, consumption will remain highest in high-income countries. In the world's poorest regions, it will remain low.
The report's authors also conclude that food transportation volumes will increase. Within 10 years, 22% of all calories consumed will be imported. Consequently, the need for transportation will grow as production moves further and further away from consumption. Therefore, the importance of international cooperation is emphasized.
Experts believe that growth in livestock production will be achieved in part by increasing productivity per animal and per hectare. New technologies, capital investment, and increased use of fertilizers and feed additives are cited as the main driving forces.
