USDA launches 'Protect Our Pigs' campaign to fight ASF

The USDA is launching a campaign to alert, educate and prevent the introduction and possible spread of African swine fever.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant HEALTH Inspection Service (APHIS) announced a new effort to prevent the introduction and spread of African swine fever in the United States through an advocacy campaign called Protect Our Pigs.

African swine fever has never been detected in the US, but has recently been confirmed in countries as close as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The US is one of the world's largest pork producers and the world's second largest pork exporter. If the disease arrives in the US, it is estimated that it could cost the country $50 billion over 10 years.

APHIS is deploying various outreach activities to support commercial pork producers, veterinarians and pig owners. The new Protect Our Pigs website, aphis.usda.gov/ProtectOurPigs, will feature content such as downloadable fact sheets and posters, educational videos, social media graphics, and a new interactive biosafety guide. If African swine fever is detected in the US, APHIS will also be ready to respond immediately by providing useful information and resources for pig owners and the public.

As part of these outreach events, APHIS will be hosting an African Swine Fever: What You Need to Know workshop on June 29, which will bring together a panel of experts representing the swine industry, pig owners and veterinarians to discuss the latest news on the disease, protective measures and respond to questions.
