Mexico starts importing live cattle from Belize

A new trade agreement between Mexico and Belize has enabled Belizean farmers to increase the supply of live cattle to the North American country.

The new trade deal, made possible by the efforts of the Department of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise and the Belize Animal Breeders Association, sent 1,642 cattle to the Mexican MEAT processing company SuKarne. According to Amandala magazine, the latest shipment this month consisted of 166 cattle purchased from Blue Creek farmers.

Meanwhile, "Belize and Mexico continue to explore coordinating their pest control systems and expanding partial scope agreements to expand trade between the two countries," the Belize government said in a press release. This month, in an effort to improve the genetic diversity and quality of livestock, Belize promoted the implantation of 110 Black Brangus and Braford cattle embryos in the village of Blue Creek. The Belizean government imported embryos from Argentina based on consultations with key Belizean agricultural stakeholders.
