Synthetic MEAT cannot be sold in the European Union because it has not been approved by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
Austrian and Italian ministers said there should first be public consultation and research into the effects of such lab-grown meat, and then, if - as is likely - it is approved for human consumption, it should be clearly labeled.
Austrian Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig said synthetic meat, which is already approved for sale in the US and Singapore, is “in no way comparable to naturally raised meat.”
He said it was "produced under sterile conditions with all kinds of artificial additives and at high energy costs" and that "discussion and comprehensive impact assessment" was required and, if it is eventually approved in the European Union, "we call for mandatory labeling,” he said.
That's why his country, along with France and Italy, "have now come together to form a culinary alliance on this issue," Tochnig said.
