
These include cattle , buffalo, horses, pigs, goats, sheep, poultry (broilers, layers, breeders), other birds (geese, ducks, turkeys, quail, ostriches), aquatic animals, rabbits, guinea pigs and bees (Apis mellifera).
According to the resolutions of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR), the principles of animal welfare are as follows:
Animal welfare for each species can be accurately and scientifically determined.
Ensuring welfare conditions for animals in a variety of production systems, including improving housing conditions, nutrition, treatment and prevention of diseases, and minimizing pain, stress and suffering.
The management of production species in the agricultural sector should promote positive relationships between people and animals.
In accordance with the provisions of the above-mentioned resolutions, MADR delegated to the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) the task of developing methodologies for assessing animal welfare conditions based on principles of repeatability and simplicity, with measurable indicators for all the above-mentioned species. In addition, ICA will undertake inspection, surveillance and control functions to ensure compliance with sanitary, animal welfare and safety requirements.
