CHINA 's agriculture ministry said on Wednesday it had suspended pork imports from Italy after African swine fever (ASF) was detected in a wild boar in the country, REUTERS reported.

This was the first reported case on the Italian mainland since the virus entered Western Europe in 2018. Italy is the seventh largest pork producer in the European Union with a $9.1 billion industry.

The virus was detected in the Piedmont region, and the Piedmont regional HEALTH department confirmed the case after testing tissue samples from a wild boar that was found dead in Ovada in the northern region.

ASF is almost always fatal in pigs and wiped out about half of China's herd in 2019. The virus continues to cause outbreaks in the country and is a major concern in terms of the global pork trade. ASF is not dangerous to humans and does not pose a danger to food.
