The minister also noted that thanks to the support of the state, Russia has created its own database of breeding resources for 13 types of farm animals. The import of genetic material remains relevant only in some cases, the minister added. “We are developing an information and analytical system for breeding resources and plan to launch it into commercial operation for a number of animals this year. By 2026, all 13 species will be represented in this system,” Patrushev said.
The executive director of the Rincon Management company, Konstantin Korneev, says that the plans of the Ministry of Agriculture are feasible subject to a number of conditions. “The indicator of providing the industry with its own genetics is quite achievable, provided there is sufficient investment in the industry, the creation of new own breeding products, ensuring the proper level of biosafety and training of personnel, especially livestock specialists. Currently, the supply of Russian genetics is approximately 5%. Russian cross chickens are being tested at production sites,” the expert said.
The task associated with the development of our own cross of chickens is primarily due to the need to reduce dependence on foreign supplies, continues Korneev. “It's not about increasing efficiency, because all crosses are very similar. “Smena 9” in terms of its production indicators is almost identical to foreign crosses and is in no way inferior to them in terms of efficiency parameters,” explained Korneev. According to him, the development of our own genetics is also based on the prospects for its successful export. This task will inevitably arise for Russian genetics producers to expand their customer base, Korneev noted.
The Smena breeding center, the construction of which began in 2020, became operational in May 2023. The main task of the center is breeding the Smena-9 cross. Investments in the project amounted to 5 billion rubles. The new selection and genetic center will help reduce the dependence of the Russian poultry industry on imported breeding birds. President of the Russian Poultry Union Vladimir Fisinin previously said that the goal of Russian poultry farmers is to increase the share of domestic crosses in the industry to 15% by 2025.
In February 2023, the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science reported that in terms of its performance indicators, the new cross is ahead of its foreign counterparts. Thus, in comparison with the foreign cross "Ross 308", the live weight of broiler chickens at 35 days of age is higher by 4.7%, the average daily gain is by 2.1%, the safety factor is by 2.2%, the productivity index is by 6 ,8%.
