The registration process for the vaccine, which was tested in October 2023, is nearing completion in several more Asian countries, including India, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Nepal. The world's first live attenuated (weakened) ASF vaccine is being produced by the Vietnamese company AVAC. To date, approximately 3.5 million doses have been produced.
The bulk of the vaccine (3 million doses) is intended for the domestic market; the remainder was purchased by the Philippines and Nigeria, which are suffering from the spread of the African swine fever virus. Another 1.5 million reserve doses will be used to immunize 80% of the pig population in problem areas in Vietnam. African swine fever remains an obstacle to the development of the Vietnamese pig farming industry. Since the beginning of this year, 18 outbreaks have been registered in the southern province of Long An. ASF has damaged 70 pig farms in the largest province, Nghe An, in the north of the country.
