Meat imports to China fell by 17% in June due to low domestic prices

In June 2021, China imported 743,000 tons of meat, down 17% from the same month in 2020. The decline in domestic pork prices has hit China 's demand for meat imports, according to Reuters.

Meat imports in June also decreased by 5.8% compared to May (789,000 tons). However, meat imports in the first half of the year stood at 5.08 million tons, data from the General Administration of Customs of China showed, up from last year's figure of 4.75 million tons in the first six months of 2020.

Since the beginning of this year, domestic pork prices have halved, driven by large imports and increased production from restocking and farm expansion efforts after African swine fever wiped out herds.

Last week, prices were at 21.94 yuan ($3.39) per kg.
