The United States exports chicken with bones to South Africa under a tariff quota (TRQ) agreement that has been set at 71,290 tons for quarterly imports between April 2021 and March 2022.

The 2021/2022 US chicken-and-bone quota was 84% met, down 10% from the previous year. The United States, the European Union and Brazil are the largest exporters of bone-in chicken to South Africa.

The quota was not fully utilized due to several factors, including higher poultry prices and shipping costs, COVID-related restrictions, complications caused by the violent riots in Durban, and major delays caused by cyber attacks on South African ports in July 2021.
