The State Duma approved the law on products with improved characteristics

At the plenary session of the State Duma, the draft federal law “On agricultural products, raw materials and foodstuffs with improved characteristics” developed by the Ministry of Agriculture of RUSSIA was adopted in the third reading. The law will come into force on March 1, 2022. 

The main difference between organic products and products with improved characteristics is that they will use intensive agricultural technologies in the production of food products classified in the second category. However, they guarantee a high degree of food safety.

In particular, the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and ionizing radiation is excluded at all stages of the production cycle. In addition, strict rationing of pesticides and heavy metals is expected.

Unlike organic food, in the production of raw materials and food with improved characteristics, the use of synthetic mineral fertilizers with specially specified conditions for the content of toxic impurities and chemical plant protection products with a low degree of environmental impact is allowed.

Certification of "green" products will be voluntary for the supplier. Information for consumers will be entered in a single register with direct access to information. Now the Ministry of Agriculture is developing a sign that will highlight products with improved characteristics on store shelves.
